Richard Dawkins offers the virus as a model for understanding religion.  Just like a virus is a self-replicating body of genetic information that infects host cells to spread copies of itself, religion is a self-replicating body of information that infects human minds and uses humans to spread copies of itself.

The haven all memes depend on reaching is the human mind, but a human mind is itself an artifact created when memes restructure a human brain in order to make it a better habitat for memes.
