Even before it opened on the Edinburgh Festival fringe in 2007, there were calls for Jihad: The Musical to be boycotted by theatre-goers. Now Mandrake hears that the controversial production will open in London at the Jermyn Street Theatre early in the New Year. Although it features songs such as Building A Bomb Today and I Wanna Be Like Osama, Ben Scheuer, its composer and co-lyricist, insists that it is not in the worst possible taste.

I posted this video recently on Facebook, and am posting it here at the behest of a good friend who insists it deserves a place in the archives. I am including my original comments and links, and would only add that if you have children, I promise you wouldn’t mind watching episodes of Histeria! with them. They are very cleverly written with plenty of subtle jokes and musical parodies for more mature folks. And revered historical figures like Confucius and Abe Lincoln are treated quite fairly, to be sure…HA! Enjoy!

There are many things Evangelical Christians are good at, such as bake sales and talking to me on planes. They’re less adept at other things, such as comedy and fighting lions. Christians aren’t funny because they tend to be literal-minded. Also because they’re sad about having had sex with only one person.

The satirical paper The Onion demonstrates how ridiculous it is to suggest that God’s motives are beyond our understanding.
