Namespaces and Categories: a Primer

The content in this wiki is organized and related using two special structures: Namespaces and Categories.

A namespace is a subsection of the wiki in which every item must have a different name.  In The Scripture Project, namespaces include The Bible, The Quran, The Book of Mormon, and Discuss.  No two pages in The Bible namespace (for example) may have the same name; there can be only one The Bible:Genesis 1.  However, there could be a page called “Genesis 1” in The Book Of Mormon namespace, if it made sense to create one.  Contributors to the wiki cannot create or modify namespaces; if you think a change would be helpful, please suggest it on the improvements page.  Here’s more information about namespaces.

A category is a collection of articles that share some characteristic.  Category:Old Testament is a category with several subcategories.  All the items in the Old Testament category are—you guessed it—books of The Old Testament.  As you can see, when pages are grouped into a category, they automatically appear in a list together, and that list can be easily linked from other pages.  But this is cool: Unlike namespaces, categories can be created and modified by contributors to the wiki!  So if you think a category “What does The Bible say about __________?” would enhance the wiki, you just have to add that category to every page you think should be included.  Here’s how to do that.

Namespaces and Categories are not the only way to create relationships between articles.  Any page can contain a list of links.  So another way to implement “What does the bible say about ______?” would be to just create an article with that title, and link to other pages from there.  But what namespace should you create it in?  We recommend creating it in the same namespace as the articles you intend to link to.  Here’s how to do that.
