Sceptic challenges guru to kill him live on TV

excerpt:

When a famous tantric guru boasted on television that he could kill another man using only his mystical powers, most viewers either gasped in awe or merely nodded unquestioningly. Sanal Edamaruku’s response was different. “Go on then — kill me,” he said.

At first the holy man, Pandit Surender Sharma, was reluctant, but eventually he agreed to perform a series of rituals designed to kill Mr Edamaruku live on television. Millions tuned in as the channel cancelled scheduled programming to continue broadcasting the showdown, which can still be viewed on YouTube…

...“The immediate goal I have is to stop these fraudulent babas and gurus,” says Mr Edamaruku, 55, a part-time journalist and publisher from the southern state of Kerala. “I want people to make their own decisions. They should not be guided by ignorance, but by knowledge.

“I’d like to see a post-religious society — that would be an ideal dream, but I don’t know how long it would take.”

How marvelous. I know it is more difficult to actually bite this bullet and invite mystical curse, our brains seem so wired for superstitious qualms. Hats off to the honorable and dignified gentleman. I keep wondering looking at the paper every day, When will the wheels come off of religion?

I always worry that the ‘guru’ will do something underhanded like secretly stab or poison the guy and then pretend it was just done with magic.

You can lie and/or cheat to try and show a religion to be true, but you can never honestly show one to be true.

This guy missed out on a huge opportunity.

I’d have faked dying.  Oohs and aahs all round.  Weak-hearted faint.  Guru smiles knowingly.  Then, wait! What’s this?!  I’ve been resurrected by none other than GOD Himself!

Millions throng to pay tribute to the miracle of my resurrection.

I buy a Rolls.

That’s how you play a sucker.

This reminds me of another one I recently noticed about a Kiai master challenging a MMA fighter. MMA fighter takes it easy on him but it still isn’t a real fight.

Ps, reddit’s skeptic section often has some great discussion if anyone is like me and can’t seem to get their fill.

To say all religion is bad simply because this one religion is wacked is quite a stretch. This site’s vistors pride themselves on their intellectual superiority, yet there isn’t even a logical connection.

How about this, gravity must be false because the climal scientists in the UK used fradulated data in their research.

Sounds like a similar stretch to me.

This reminds me of a similar situation we had over here in Norway a few weeks ago. There was, again unfortunately, a islamic strike going on due to the publication of a new muhammed characature. A muslim man (of course) held an apell to the masses of 3000 individuals. When asked about his thoughts on the recent stoning of a man in Somalia, he replied “as I have understood that man was a homosexual, therefore that was the fate he deserved. These are the rules all muslims must obey”.

Kim Friele, an elderly lesbian woman and a fighter for homosexual rights in scandinavia challenged him the following day to publically stone her in a location of his choice.

He failed to reply, and left the country to go to a fundamentalist faith school in saudi arabia.

What people need to remember that even if Mr. Edamaruku dies, it does not have to be related to any quackery by the shaman. He could quite possibly die sometime before, during or after the “spell” or whatever he decides todo, and it would immediately be attributed to the woo. This is a lose-lose situation because if there is one thing we know, it is that Mr. Edamaruku is going to die one day, and whenever that happens the wackos can always attribute it to woo.

I do believe that there are genuine gurus, holy persons, and ascended masters.  I don’t believe they make television appearances to prove their existence.

Well, he just said that he doesn’t believe they show on television which implies that they actually don’t long to prove themselves (-:

But he has strong reasons to believe that they exist (-:
