Rick Perry ads draw blood

By Jonathan Capehart

Video: Washington Post blog

The script of Rick Perry’s new campaign ad:

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.

As president, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.

Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again. I’m Rick Perry and I approve this message.

This scares me because I know there is no shortage of idiots who will swallow this and try getting this scumbag elected on a theocratic platform.

They can try all they want, they will not succeed.  This was political suicide.

If you think about though, he shows some integrity by admitting his views so blatantly, as wrong as those views are.

Perry’s ad pretty much signifies his campaign has given up hope of winning the nomination.  No serious person would believe that a candidate can win a general national election with this kind of politics.  Any Republican candidate needs to win the middle and independent voters, who are not voting for conservatives on the basis of socially conservative issues.

The other significance of this ad, I suppose, is to indicate that Perry is a both a moron and overly religious—two things that seem to correlate pretty well.  He’s right about one thing, you do not have to sit in a pew every Sunday to realize there is something very wrong with this Country.  In fact, I posit, you’re probably more likely to make that realization faster if you assiduously avoid wasting every Sunday sitting on an uncomfortable bench listening to a clown without make-up pretend to conjure magic and utter incantations.

I was born and raised here in Texas, and have had the, let’s call it opportunity to watch Perry’s shenanigans for as long as I can remember. He becomes what he needs to be to stay popular in Texas. On a positive note for him, he can count this campaign as a magnificent success because he has not ended up in a federal penitentiary. If he is examined a little too closely, as any candidate should be, he would no doubt be facing a variety of charges stemming from his corruption, his good ole boy quid pro quo way of doing things, or, possibly, from his relentless gerrymandering.
