excerpt:

FAINE: Do you believe in God?

PM: No, I don’t Jon, I’m not a religious person.

...Gillard hastened to add she was brought up a Baptist, attending the Mitcham Baptist Church…

What a breath of fresh air from a politician.  Now will a secular American politician please stand up?

I wholeheartedly agree, but there’s no way in hell they’d make it beyond a senator’s aide in America today. Not many votes unless you can appease all the simple-minded constituents with your flashy civil religion!

Hopefully this is the beginning of a trend towards reason…

@gcheng,

...when aliens land on Earth and declare humanity as a big science experiment.

It is exponentially more plausible to contend that a physical alien race, and not an omnipotent and omnipresent god, created all life on our planet, though I contend neither.

ignorance has two faces.

believers and nonbelievers.

reality also has two faces

love and intelligence.

as long as we confuse intellectual knowledge with intelligence reason has no home.

Brave statement! The only spark of honesty i’ve seen from a polititian in years. If she can apply the critical reasoning used to reach that point from a Baptist origin to the running of our country she will have my vote. Unfortunately she will be condemned for it. We seem bent on going down the road of the USA where to not believe (at least publicly - that honesty thing again?!) is not be elected.

I would like to read about how she concludes her speeches.  With no reference to a flying pasta monster, I’m not sure how people would know when she concludes delivering a speech!

Guys, she technically wasn’t elected by the people of Australia for the PM position.  She was asked by the Parliament and her party to challenge Kevin Rudd’s leadership when his poll numbers took a dive.  So let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  We still don’t have a democratically elected official in a western nation’s highest office that is a bona fide atheist.  It’s true that Australia has elected its lesser officials who are out-of-the-closet atheists, which is light years ahead of the US, but still no atheists to higher offices.  Which only means one thing…religion still matters in so called “advanced” society.

Also, worth noting; Gillard did say that she doesn’t believe in God, but she also stated that she has a “deep respect” for religion.  I guess we have to pick our battles here, but in my mind, she still isn’t adhering to the majority of free thinkers who not only believe religion is deleterious, but know it and can prove it.

My 2 cents.
