Oklahoma to display Ten Commandments monument at state capitol

Not even a popular governor dared stand in the way of the Ten Commandments.

Gov. Brad Henry, with some polls showing him having a popularity rating of nearly 70 percent, signed without comment Monday a measure to place a Ten Commandments monument on the state Capitol grounds.
Had Henry vetoed House Bill 1330, it was likely the GOP-run Legislature would have overridden it, something that has occurred only once in the 61/2 years Henry has been governor. The measure easily passed both chambers: 83-2 in the House and 38-8 in the Senate.

“It’s time now to go to the design part,” said Rep. Mike Ritze, the measure’s author and a freshman legislator.

Ritze, R-Broken Arrow, said the monument will re-emphasize the history and heritage of America’s legal system.

“Our laws spring from English law, which is ultimately rooted in Mosaic Law,” he said.

“The history of many of our current laws can be traced to the Ten Commandments, and this monument will simply acknowledge that heritage.”

The measure takes effect Nov. 1. The State Capitol Preservation Commission is authorized to find a spot for the monument, according to the bill.

Ritze said his family will pay for the design and construction of the 6-foot monolith, as well as maintenance costs. He estimated the monument’s cost to be about $10,000.

Ritze said the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a similar monument’s existence on the Texas Capitol grounds. Ritze, a physician, said he didn’t know whether a lawsuit would be filed to challenge Oklahoma’s monument.

“In this situation, there could be,” he said. “We’ve prepared for it in the bill.”

The measure identifies the Liberty Legal Institute, which was involved in the defense of the Texas monument, as being available to help the attorney general’s office defend a legal challenge.

Reaction varies
The American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma may file a lawsuit depending on how it fares with its challenge to a Ten Commandments monument in Haskell County, said Tamya Cox, the group’s legislative counsel.
“We’re very disappointed the governor signed House Bill 1330,” she said. “It usurped the First Amendment. Thankfully, we have until Nov. 1 before the monument could be erected, so we are going to definitely take our time.”

The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty also opposed the monument being placed on the Capitol grounds.

“We should be more concerned with following the Ten Commandments rather than merely posting them on government property,” said K. Hollyn Hollman, the committee’s general counsel. “Religion flourishes best when the separation of church and state is protected.”

Sen. Randy Brogdon, Senate sponsor of HB 1330, said he is “tickled pink” the governor signed the measure.

“He chose to be with the people on this one,” said Brogdon, R-Owasso. “It was widely supported by people around the state. I was pleasantly surprised.”

I think they should be required to post all 3 sets. After all, who are they to tell me which set of 10 I must follow.  Personally, I think that anyone who boils a kid in his mothers milk is going straight to hell.

What have bronze age commandments got to do with modern morals? The first 4 are about the jealous Jehovah only wanted his slaves to worship hime. What are people of other faiths going to say about that?

Whilst most modern Christians (hopefully!) wouldn’t condone most of what the wicked Bible verses say. What worries me and most rational people is that Whilst they (the wicked verses) are still left in KJV, they can be pulled forth at any time and used indiscriminately, by any nutter, church or regime (such as the Roman Catholic, Jew Hating, Adolf Hitler did). I am reminded of numerous Catholic Inquisitions, Holy Wars, Witch Hunts or todays right wing Bible belt Pious Christians!!!

The Golden Rule (which existed thousands of years before Christianity and is used by all Religions and civilised societies) is the only guide rule necessary.
Half the 10 Commandments are about a vain invisible God’s need to be worshipped!
The second half of the ten Commandments are about rules for bronze age tribes.
5. Honour your Parents (remembering disobedient Children get stoned, I’m not impressed with such violence).
6. Don’t Kill (Unless it’s for God or the State (justified or Holy War and Capital Punishment)). Incidently if America is a Christian country, then why is it still following the Jewish Eye for an eye principle instead of following Jesus Christs rule of turning the other cheek???
7. Don’t committ adultery (another stoning offence FOR THE WOMAN).
8. Don’t Steal (Tell that to Televangelist Priests who get the poor to send money to spread ‘God’s word).
9. Don’t Lie (Tell that to Priests, Politicians etc.).
10. Dont Covet neighbours house, wife, manservant, maidservant, cattle, nor anything else of HIS (Christian America is the Greediest Nation on Earth).
If God is supposed to be all knowing then surely his rules would be all encompassing for all time.
Nothing Unique in those Ten Commandments that hasn’t already been said by other Religions and civilised Countries throughout all History.
Incidently the ten Commandments arn’t the only commands from God. Study your Bible properly and be prepared to be shocked! Slavery condoned, Woman hating etc.
First century rules are not adequate for 21st century people.
Why are there so many different sects and denominations, if the Bibles message is so clear. Each new interpretation of the Holey Bible springs forth yet another new money making venture. If the love of money is the root of all evil, then why do the churches never have enough? And with all that money, why don’t they pay taxes?
Why should I be taxed on something I don’t believe in, when schools and hospitals really need the money!
