Newt Gingrich’s Wasteful, Scientifically Absurd Plan To Colonize the Moon
Newt Gingrich described himself as a visionary when he unveiled plans Wednesday to create a mammoth new space program, including a permanent colony on the moon within the next nine years.

I suspect that Newt is primarily driven by two motives in this. One, his desire to become president, would cause him to say anything, no matter how silly, that would play well with his target audience, and, two, he thinks that the ability launch nuclear weapons with impunity from the safety of the surface of the moon would somehow be a good thing. ‘Colony’ is probably a euphemism for military base.
With that being said, I would certainly be in favor of a revitalized space program having the more sensible objective of investigating avenues that show promise of actually learning something, like what is actually going on beneath the ice of Europa. If those red stains are some sort of microbial life, maybe something else has evolved with them as a food source. Maybe tiny little fish-like creatures or tube worms or something. That would be interesting to investigate.
