More than 9 in 10 Americans believe in God
Results of a recent Gallup poll reveal that Americans are still extremely religious—unlike Canadian, U.K., or European allies.

Those surveys are worthless in my opinion. The question isn’t posed properly. They need to probe more to find out what the person saying yes defines as God. With all the new-age hokey nonsense out there I bet the traditional god people believed in has diminished.

Hey Andie…I’m in the Midwest (even worse…near John Kline and Michele Bachmann)! Gaw!!! 4 out of 4 people in our house are atheists. Although baptised Catholic, I managed to find reason by the time I was a teenager! Jude, I’m sorta jeaolous…would love to be in NZ!

The “belief in god or universal spirit” question should at least have been separated to get a better picture. And anyway, we all know people lie on this question. I mean we’ve all seen surveys that also say some 15% of the country are atheists or agnostics.
Here’s the part that gets me though: “Belief in God drops below 90% among younger Americans, liberals, those living in the East, those with postgraduate educations, and political independents. However, belief in God is nearly universal among Republicans and conservatives and, to a slightly lesser degree, in the South.”
People always make such a big deal about how political independents decide elections but in roughly half (I think) of US states, political independents can’t vote in primaries. By the time of the general election they are stuck voting for someone who probably isn’t going to win anyway, or a religious panderer from one of the two main parties.

God has always been associated with high profit, America’s true deity.

I grew up in New Zealand and Australia, and moved to the US in the 90’s. I remember before leaving hearing some stats that 99% of Americans believe in god (looking back that probably wasn’t true). I was so horrified and really thought how the heck was I going to cope living in a place with people like that! I’m happy to say that my 10 years in LA was around a lot of cool and mostly sane people (they must gravitate to the movie industry!), but the way the US is going, I’m not sorry to be back in New Zealand. Good luck America!
