Letters: Scientists Respond to Our Review of Richard Dawkins’s “Greatest Show on Earth”

By Elsa Dixler
Posted: October 24, 2009.

Print: New York Times

Excerpt:

The review by Nicholas Wade, a science reporter for The Times, of Richard Dawkins’s “Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution” (Oct. 11) drew an unusually large number of letters to the editor. And an unusually large number of those came from readers who identified themselves as scientists or philosophers.

...I share Dawkins’s frustration with those who deny the scientific fact of evolution. By insisting that evolution is a theory only, Wade unwittingly provides fodder for the misguided creationist claim that evolution is “only a theory.”
—Mark A. Schlessman, professor of biology, Vassar College.

It brings tears to my eyes to see atheists supporting each other in such a vocal way.  I can only conclude that the work of the “New Atheists” like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris is having an impact in changing people’s mentality.

What a great victory for science. Journalists (like me) need to look at this and understand that balance does not mean giving equal time to error. There are limits to free speech and lies and factual mistakes are two of those kinds of speech that journalists can and should resist. The trick is, we need to be knowledgeable enough to understand when we are facing them. Wade’s comments show he lacks that knowledge of science, and isn’t fit to report on it, IMO.

This debate, not a debate actually but the slow lifting of the veil of nonsensical dogma and twisting of history, has only just begun.

But I am afraid that like communism and prior unpleasant political ideals religion will fight this assault of reason over superstition tooth and nail as “they have a great deal to loose”.  It may take a good deal longer than we in the “common sense” community are willing to admit ....but it must be done (to paraphrase Harris) ...if only for the sake of the future of the human race.

It is encouraging to see the emerging consensus regarding evolution as a fact.  It is time scientists begin referring to the fact of evolution.

Tilberian, I’ve been following Nicholas Wade’s reporting for a while, and he’s a dyed-in-the-wool evolutionist.  His articles often focus on evolution (especially early human evolution) and natural selection, with some interesting work recently on group selection.  I think this review of his which drew so much united criticism is more an example of journalists bending over backwards to appear fair to both sides, rather than an example of a journalist being ignorant of the issues.
