Asheville City Councilman Cecil Bothwell believes in ending the death penalty, conserving water and reforming government—but he doesn’t believe in God. His political opponents say that’s a sin that makes him unworthy of serving in office, and they’ve got the North Carolina Constitution on their side.
“That no religious test ought ever to be required as a qualification for any office of profit or trust in this State, other than a declaration of belief in the existence of God; nor shall the Legislature prescribe any other oath of office than the oath prescribed by this Constitution” - Maryland Constitution
Looks like a requirement to me, unless I’m reading it incorrectly.
