Judge tosses creationists’ effort to offer master’s degrees

In 2008 the Institute for Creation Research sued after the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board denied its request to offer a degree in creationism science. On Friday, a U.S. District Court ruled against the ICR, upholding the THECB’s right to refuse them certification.

This is progress! I really do wish the IRC people could see the idiocy in what they propose. They’re truly brainwashed beyond what I can comprehend. I’m just glad someone is standing up for science here in Texas.

It is amazing that they won’t allow higher degrees for creationism but will allow them for abiogenesis which has no less scientific rival. I find that not only pathetic, but laughable. Me thinks lysdexia has some brains running backward. Which came first the chicken or the egg and what form of matter did they arise from, animal, vegetable or mineral? Creationists are no more religious than those who espouse abiogenesis. They are equally reasonable and scientific. It is a problem that is not solvable by contemporary mankind and unless they create actual animal life from non life they will not gain my devotionl

Lori, please tell me which University offers a degree specifically in abiogenesis.

Does Texas recognize a Doctor of Divinity, which I assume is preceded by a Master’s in Theological Studies or the like?  Maybe we need a new name for such degrees, such as Doctor of Myth and Superstition (DMS).

I don’t know about Texas but Arkansas recogninzes the “Doctor Of Divinity” thing. In fact, almost every church I can ever remember going to always had a “Dr” preaching from the pulpit. This always really impressed my grandmother.

it is perfectly scientific to study the possible models in which life could occur out of nonlife (abiogenesis)

Surely discussing the development or evolution of living material from non-living material involves a semantic element i.e. how we define life. Filling gaps in knowledge with unverifiable and unfalsifiable explanations a la creationism and intelligent design is at the very least childish and worse reckless. To reward ‘beliefs’ like these with academic letters and give credibility to them should be avoided at all costs. It’s nice to see a sensible reaction from the US courts on the matter

The monkey trials are long over. The creationists are just still beating a dead horse, insisting only believers can see it resurrected.  I’m angry they keep wasting our court’s time on such frivolous, so ignorant as to be not just embarrassing, but insane, law suits.  This is EXACTLY the same as trying to resurrect the world-is-flat-&-center-of-universe cosmology.

Hi Lori,

Thanks for posting! Please let me know whether you are familiar with Poe’s law. I would enjoy continuing this conversation and will await your reply. Kind regards,

Bryan
