As a community college biology professor I am not surprised. I have had students that do very well until the class gets to subjects that directly relate to evolution and some will fail on purpose. I have had students say that they will never believe in evolution anyway so why should they pay attention or study the subject for one exam. I find that fundamentalists do not even give the evidence an honest look and investigation.

Sadly, indoctrination trumps education in far too many people. These folks have had fear, hell, and damnation spewed at them from such a young age, it is all they know and all they are permitted to believe.
From before they were old enough to understand and comprehend the absurdity preached to them by the only people they know and trust, their parents; they are informed to believe what they are told else they will be damned to hell for eternity and suffer unbearable tortures.
Nice parenting. Sleep well children.

It is astonishing to me that this can be true.
I’m from England and whilst in a recent survey 64% of English people classed themselves as Christian, only 12% said that they would take their moral, social or political views from the church.
In England, being Christian seems to be something people class themselves as, as part of their heritage more than anything else.
It’s a shame that people take it a bit more seriously out in the states!

Most people holding the creationist view do not want to disturb their belief in the big nap.

I completely agree with buckeyenonbeliever. Indoctrination of children is what keeps religion going.
How can 46% of “The Greatest Nation on the Planet” (as we are so often reminded) believe in such nonsense?

I think they are simply cornered with facts and proof, so they to squirm and wiggle it to their belief. Our children are getting smarter and eventually will realize the proof of God is not nearly as real as the proof of science. That’s why many religions are editing their works to calling the Virgin Mary, a young women, taking away Limbo and purgatory, submitting to evolution theories, etc. in an attempt to curb the modern intelligent young adults to ask fewer questions, other words, the church is EVOLVING, the very thing they preached against til it was proven.

You have to wonder, is it what we Americans truly believe or what we want to believe?
