Florida Pastor Doesn’t Get Why Atheists Aren’t Registered Like Sex Offenders

By DAN AMIRA

Meet Michael Stahl, otherwise known as “Pastor Mike.” Stahl lives in Miramar, Florida, and leads an online church called Living Water Church, which we think is a fancy way of saying he hangs out a lot in a Christian-themed chat room. Stahl has proposed the creation of a national registry for atheists, much like the ones in existence for sex offenders.

Wow. On reading this I couldn’t help but picture we atheists having to sew some yellow symbol to our clothing so those around us could yell at us and taunt us, etc. I’m glad that the comments under this crap had a similar theme.

Maybe he and all the others like him should be put in a national registry for stupid and intolerant people.

Actually this wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I recently moved and was afraid, in part, due to the fact that I didn’t know if I would have any fellow atheists in the area. Maybe us atheists could use this to our advantage!

The part that rings home in the article for me is where he talks about not shopping at athiest owned stores to stop feeding satan.

I live in a town of about 3000 people and keep my athiesm to myself (save for close friends and family) for just this reason.  I own a business and fear the repercussions.

You can have my name on the list provided you add an attribute column titled “Gun Owner”  :-|  That way, when you come for me, wether it be to “testify” or march me to the death camp, the bright light you will see you will know it to be muzzle flash and not rapture.

I type this clearly in frustration, but I also know the history of fundamentalistic idealism and how it operates.  So you have a fight on your hands.  I urge you to leave it as an intellectual and rational exchange of ideas.

Right.  Atheist registry.  Like a sex offender registry.  Makes total sense, except that it seems like an awful lot of rapists and child molesters tend to line up on the church side of things.  Oh well.

His suggestion to boycott atheist-owned businesses is eerily reminiscent of 1930s Germany.

Moreover, I’m not sure why, but for some reason hearing atheism called a religion still annoys me.

@Ryan - Pretty sure that’s the point. The reason religionists like to call atheism a religion is because we take the position that it’s not one.

If we flipped the script and started demanding tax breaks and federal subsidies for our “religion,” you’d better believe they’d pitch a fit and suddenly we wouldn’t be a ‘religion’ anymore.

Atheism is a religion like ‘off’ is a TV channel.

Add my name to the registry as well. Maybe it will keep the religiotards away from me.
