Faithful to a God-hating ideology to the bitter end

By Jeffrey T. Kuhner
Posted: August 18, 2010.

Print: World Tribune

excerpt:

In a recent column for Vanity Fair, Mr. Hitchens movingly describes his war with that awful affliction. As someone whose mother died of pancreatic cancer after a protracted, painful struggle, I deeply sympathize with Mr. Hitchens’ plight. I wish this dreaded illness on no one — even my worst enemy. I hope and I pray that his treatment will enable him to live many more years.

...Like all atheists, Mr. Hitchens is a hypocrite. He denounces the existence of God while simultaneously living off the ethical norms established by the Judeo-Christian tradition. For example, in his column, he lauds the “selfless” doctors who are treating him, describing their commitment to the dignity of the individual. The sacred nature of human life — and why the West distinctly cherishes it — is a direct result of our Christian heritage: It is the social application of the imperative to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

I agree, Jason. I see why Project Reason is linking to it but that second paragraph turns my stomach.

I think the article is pretty despicable, and also representative of unfortunately common, awful thinking.  I also found a few lines that are worth hanging onto:

“Mr. Hitchens is a virulent supporter of abortion, homosexuality and even — I am not making this up — masturbation…. This used to be called perversion. Now it is simply progressive chic.”

Kuhner thinks that masturbation should be considered a perversion.  I… I’m sorry, I can’t help chuckling over this line.  It reminds me of the dialogue from Dr. Strangelove about “deviated preverts”.

I will suggest that Mr. Kuhner is exactly the sort of person whom Hitchens dismantles quite freely, now taking a crass potshot at a dying man.

mathew - yeah.  I posted before I read the whole thing (I wasn’t going to but I’m a masochist).  When I got to that paragraph I thought, huh, this article is good for a laugh after all.

Hey Jeff, I jerk it at least twice a day.  Did that come from my “Christian heritage” too?  Good thing we have this “Christian heritage,” otherwise we might come to stupid ideas about right and wrong.  We might irrationally decide that free orgasms aren’t the best thing since sliced bread, and that each little sperm you ejaculate is a soul you’re murdering, and we should avoid condoms even in the face of AIDS pandemics.  Without being told the difference between right and wrong from our christian god, we might erroneously think that the best way to stay god’s wrath is to throw rocks at all the gays, adulturers, and blasphemers until they’re dead.  We might decide that institutions that seem to systematically attract and house pedophile’s are ok as long as a guy in a white robe says its ok.  That would be unfortunate.  Fortunately we have this christian heritage keeping us from thinking completely psychotic things like that.

I really can’t believe how many Christians are all taking turns throwing dirt on Christopher Hitchens since his diagnosis .
It doesn’t make it ok if you first say that your praying for him or that you wouldn’t wish this on anyone before you then attempt to slander his good name .
Funny thing is that your attempt falls flat because society has already moved on and your “perversions” are accepted now since we realized with good reason that masterbation , homosexuality , doesn’t hurt anyone .

The man, Jeffrey T. Kuhner, is cruel. If Jesus said they would know his followers by their love is true, then Jeffrey T. Kuhner is no Christian, just a vile man who uses religion to justify his hatred. If there is a Hell, it will be populated by the Jeffrey T. Kuhners of the world.

You are totally correct on that point . Most so called christians do not even read the teachings of their own guy .  Attempting to “take on” Christoffer Hitchens at this time in his life is so plainly self serving, vile and spiteful and it is in no way endorsed by any reasoned atheists to speak of .
Any human being with any empathy should understand what he and his family and friends are dealing with . We have all heard him speak about it and hes being very honest and he doesnt have to do any of that .
Christoffer Hitchens doesnt owe any one anything , it’s us that that OWE HIM for enlightening our minds.
Poeple like this Jeffrey T. Kuhner need to take a long look in the mirror and put down the pen .

I was going to leave a scathing comment on his site, but remembered that Christians don’t take criticism well and it probably would be edited or not published at all. Slandering atheists is typical Christian behavior as they can’t fathom a life without ancient superstitious nonsense. Besides, masturbation is good for the prostate.

How sad is to read such an ignorant, weak and limited person such as this creature/person called Kuhner. His vile towards an intellectual giant such as C. Hitchens, suffering a terminal disease proves how dark his inner core is. His shortness of perception and bias demonstre that human stupidity has no boundries.

I am… well, not speechless, obviously, but I am appalled by the cold-heartedness Kuhner displays.  “I deeply sympathize with Mr. Hitchens’ plight. I wish this dreaded illness on no one — even my worst enemy”, and then he goes on about how Mr. Hitchens basically gets what he deserves. How can any human being be so devoid of the most basic decency, empathy and intellectual honesty?
This really makes me sick. Physically.
What an evil monster.

After the obituary Hitchens gave Falwell (which I heartily recommend to all “he should be out on the street with a cardboard sign, selling pencils from a cup!”), he isn’t in a position to get huffy about people dancing on his grave, nor do I think he has gone soft and all of a sudden cares what his enemies think of him.

I’m more annoyed about a lot of unreferenced claims about things Hitchens supposedly said of or believed. I’ve only heard Hitchens say positive things about John Paul II, while the author lumps him in with Ratzinger, who Hitchens clearly despises. Again, I’ve never heard regret over the fall of the Soviet Union, although the author attributes that regret to many of Hitchens’ views.

The article is of a kind with the Sharon Angle article - a stream of attributing motives and thoughts to someone based in ill informed bias and dubious inferences.

But I’d actually like a clear description from Hitchens on his view of Marxism, Leftism, the Soviet Union, etc. It’s unfathomable to me what he could have seen in the Dictatorship of the Proletariat that could recommend it.

Undoubtedly the only bit in all this drivel that would cause the man himself to wince is this: “As someone whose mother died of pancreatic cancer after a protracted, painful struggle…”

Anyone who has followed Hitch knows that his (beloved) mother died in a suicide pact with her lover, his father dying years later of the same disease that is now overtaking the son…

Here’s to you, Hitch. You have indeed been “burning such a lovely light”...

I have heard Hitchens quite ably point out on several occasions the fact that the human race had been functioning quite well for over 100,000 years before the so called Judeo-Christian ethics were cribbed from their ancient predecessors.

There is an old Latin legal term res ipsa loquitur. The thing speaks for itself.  Mr Kuhner is proof of all that is offensive in religion. Not a touch of humanity in him. Amazing he thinks that his religions provides a basis for morality. I have always wondered what the conversation between Isaac and Abraham would have been like as they came down the mountain.  And how is that story (touted as evidence of faith) different from flying into buildings?

Me thinks that under all that hatred, he protests too much, perhaps he is afraid that his god is a product of human imagination.

I saw that Hitchens said this about Marx in a January 2010 interview:

“Hitchens: Karl Marx’s best writing is on America. He said it was the great new country for worker’s equality. There was free land for the peasants. It was republican, not monarchical, and it was anti-imperialist. If you look at Henry Adams’ memoirs, when his father was at the embassy in London, the Times of London was in favor of the Confederacy. Gladstone helped the Confederacy build a navy. Karl Marx, meanwhile, said Lincoln is our man. The United States is our future. That’s not what they teach you in school about Marx.”

Just goes to show that it looks like Hitch’s critic who wrote this article heard him say something about Marx and drew an erroneous conclusion.  Oh, if the conservatives would know that Marx supported Lincoln!

The World Tribune should be sued for libel because of this: “During the Cold War, he [Christopher Hitchens] openly called for the defeat of America in its struggle against the Soviet Union.”

Plain wrong.  That turd of a human being Kuhn should be forced to show proof for this claim or apologize for defaming such a patriot

The more Christian response comes from Dr. Francis Collins. He has been working with the Hitchens family to find the best treatment for Christopher. While Kuhn reveals himself as a buffoon looking for publicity, Dr. Collin’s has shown a response from his faith.

Lucky for us, traditions like Ephesians 6:5 have fallen from popularity.
