excerpt:

Christopher Hitchens disclosed to his atheist comrades on Friday that he has now lost his voice to esophageal cancer but his atheistic beliefs remain stronger than ever.

“Our weapons are the ironic mind against the literal; the open mind against the credulous; the courageous pursuit of truth against the fearful and abject forces who would set limits to investigation (and who stupidly claim that we already have all the truth we need),” wrote Hitchens in the letter, which was also posted on The Richard Dawkins Foundation website on Friday.

I read the letter on Richard’s website. It was beautiful, moving. I’m so sorry to hear Christopher has lost his audible voice, but his word can still be heard and will be for a very long time to come.

In the future, people will look back and pity us for living in this unenlightened time.

I hope you get well Christopher so you can keep on writing. We need you!

I am very saddened to hear that Christopher has lost his voice. I hope his wife and kids are strong and stay strong through this and keep their heads high for having him a father and a husband. A true warrior for humanity. His voice will be heard for a very long time to come.

Christopher Hitchens has been a hero of mine since 2009.  I hope, with everything I have, that he will get better, beat this cancer, and continue to be “voice” of reason our society and country desperately need.  I am a Marine officer and find him so inspirational and hope him noting but a full recovery and long and fulfilling life.
