Conservative ideological bills concern group

With a Democrat no longer in the governor’s office to keep them in check, Republican legislators have filed numerous bills that could violate federal and state prohibitions against mixing religious doctrine with government, a group of concerned residents said Saturday.

...Republicans won some races based partly on their support for conservative ideological issues.

Some of these ideological measures, such as prohibiting evolution being taught in public schools and embryonic stem cell research, will hurt efforts to attract business to the state, Fuller said.

...Fuller said he is troubled by four bills that would define when life begins in a woman’s womb. Some are similar to a measure Henry vetoed two years ago which would have made it a crime for a scientist to perform any form of embryonic stem cell research. The House barely voted to override it; the Senate didn’t have enough votes for an override.

...“If it ever is established that an embryo is a person the whole abortion rights case falls apart,” Fuller said. “Women would have no rights. … There would be litigation beyond belief.”

Why is it that religiously motivated legislation ALWAYS removes or inhibits individual rights? How can religious people be so arrogant. Isn’t arrogance—excessive pride—considered one of the seven deadly sins to be avoided by Christians(Republicans) at all costs?

I thought Catholics believe that even sperm constitute ‘life’.  So how does life begin at conception? Just asking.

Why is it that everytime religion asks for more rights it automaticly goes against everyone’s elses right and then when we seek to restrain their rights they act like victims? Gotta love backward mentalities. They’ll save us all.

For the record, not all of us here in Oklahoma are members of the Christian right.  Just wanted to throw that out there because OK tends to show up in national news only when we’re doing something ridiculous like this.  My whole household is writing letters to our Congress to ask them to vote against this kind of intrusive Christian legislation.

Maybe somebody should propose a bill in Oklahoma for requiring the teaching in schools that aliens built the pyramids and that the world will end in 2012.

A person in my life who believes that life begins at conception in the same person who sent me a father-to-be card on Father’s Day when my wife was pregnant with my son. So which it is?

I’m reminded of something that I read long ago, which is that some state had a law declaring Pi to be equal to 3. I guess the notion of fractions was too much for the legislators at the time. At this rate, state legislators should get around to understanding evolution around 4500 C.E. (that’s the same as A.D. except that some cleric calculated the A.D. wrong to start with).

By the way, how can anyone honestly say that “life” begins in the womb, when its been around for at least 3 billion years? Even if you’re a strict biblical literalist, it’s been around for about 6000 years. Maybe they really mean something else.

Seymour,

You said: “Why is it that everytime religion asks for more rights it automaticly goes against everyone’s elses right and then when we seek to restrain their rights they act like victims? Gotta love backward mentalities. They’ll save us all.”

One problem is that you are seriously wrong in at least one respect: religion is not asking for this change, your religion is asking for this change. My religion, for instance, sees no contradiction between evolutionary theory and the existence of a deity.

You are seriously wrong in some other respects too, but I figure I would let you work on one thing at a time.

Seimour,

Please accept my apologies. I misread what you said, and accused you of exactly the opposite of what you did say.

They’re doing the same nonsence here in Florida… We are all going to have to home school our kids so they won’t think the Earth is flat or believe in an “invisible” friend!
