Church’s gay exorcism video creates stir

This article describes a video posted on YouTube by Manifested Glory Ministries of Bridgeport Connecticut.  The video shows church elders performing what they believed to be an exorcism to rid a 16-year-old boy of homosexual demons.  The church has since removed the video, though it has been copied by other sites.

The video shows the victim “lying on the floor, his body convulsing.”  During the course of the exorcism, conducted to organ music, the elders held him down and shouted at him, exhorting the homosexual demon to come out.  They shouted things like “Come out of his belly,” and “It’s in the belly — push.”  They dragged him to his feet by holding him under the armpits, after which he was subjected to more shouting.  Eventually he was placed back onto the floor and covered with a white sheet.  At one point he is seen convulsing into a paper bag as though vomiting.  This was taken as a sign that the demon was being expelled.

Statements by a church representative indicate that they thought they were doing the boy a favor, and that “He didn’t want to be like that.”  Robin McHaelin, executive director of True Colors, an advocacy group for gay youths, has another opinion.  “I think it’s horrifying,” said McHaelin.  “What saddens me is the people that are doing this think they are doing something in the kid’s best interests, when in fact they’re murdering his spirit.”

According to Kamora Herrington, director of hte True Colors mentoring program, incidents like this are fairly common.

Yes, this should be illegal. Then again, that would probably infringe on “religious freedoms,” wouldn’t it? How dehumanizing and sad. I hope he comes to fully accept himself one day.

This is what otherwise intelligent people believe, and act upon, when they do not have a grounding in critical thinking. Our culture does not, in general, value critical thinking, and our schools don’t teach it. I for one will begin evaluating how our schools do or don’t provide grounding in reason and logic, because it is with these tools that all other knowledge is built. This seems the only antidote to irrational behavior such as in this video.
