At Lincoln Memorial, a Call for Religious Rebirth

By KATE ZERNIKE and CARL HULSE
Posted: August 28, 2010.

Print: New York Times

excerpts:

“Something that is beyond man is happening,” Mr. Beck said in opening the event as the crowd thronged near the memorial grounds. “America today begins to turn back to God.”

It was part religious revival, part history lecture, as Mr. Beck invoked the founding fathers and the “black-robed regiment” of pastors of the Revolutionary War and spoke of American exceptionalism.

...[T]he program was distinctly different from most Tea Party rallies. While Tea Party groups have said they want to focus on fiscal conservatism and not risk alienating people by talking about religion or social issues, the rally on Saturday was overtly religious, filled with gospel music and speeches that were more like sermons.

Mr. Beck imbued his remarks on Saturday and at events the night before with references to God and a need for a religious revival.

...Many in the crowd said they had never been to a Tea Party rally, but they described themselves as avid Glenn Beck fans, and many said they had been motivated to come by faith.

Becky Benson, 56, traveled from Orlando, Fla., because, she said, “we believe in Jesus Christ, and he is our savior.” Jesus, she said, would not have agreed with what she called the redistribution of wealth in the form of the economic stimulus package, bank bailouts and welfare. “You cannot sit and expect someone to hand out to you,” she said. “You don’t spend your way out of debt.”

What does he mean by “something beyond man is happening ” ??

If this were true what source did he reference that from ?

If they say “America is adrift ... ”  It sounds like they are saying that they don’t support the president .

These guys don’t have hope

When there is chaos and turmoil, there is always one who can trump and polarize the masses by playing the “God” card. The problem is, he doesn’t have a very firm grasp on the concept and caters to a similar group of simple minds. Try substitution the name Zeus the next time a public speaker invokes the term God, as if they are speaking in his name. It shows how absurd they really are, and why we should avoid listening to them, and flee from anyone else who shares a robust kinship with iron age philosophy.

We don’t need any more rhetoric to further divide our nation. What we need is clear, rational, logical, objective thinkers in high places. Unfortunately, not a large percentage of them make up the constituency.

Unfortuately I think these 2 (GB and Sarah Palin) will be our republican candidates in the next election. Many people in my neck of the woods (southern US) think they are “unstoppable.”

That sentence about “can’t spend your way out of debt” is getting old to me. Sure you can. My dad, probably a very conservative person but still uses the term “democrat” to refer to himself, always used to tell me “it takes money to make money.” What about that??

Alien, they just know.  That’s the root of their epistemology.  You can’t argue reason with these people.

Sad days for America. Religion is designed to keep its followers living in fear and ignorance. It’s amazing to me that, in this day and age, anyone would subscribe to the bronze age myths and superstitions that make up religion. It’s doubly mind-boggling that any women would adhere to its misogynistic tripe. I’m actually surprised that these people care what happens to America, what with Armageddon and Jesus and The Rapture coming soon to save them all (well, at least 144,000 male virgins). What a load of…
