A war of words between Catholics and Jews

The nation’s Roman Catholic bishops, looking to clarify their position on interfaith dialogue with Jews, have instead caused an uproar by issuing a recent statement that appears to endorse attempts to convert them. A document released in 2002 by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Council of Synagogues said explicitly that Catholics should not seek to convert Jews. Last month, the bishops decided to “clarify” that statement by making it clear that evangelization is part of being Catholic and Jews are welcome to convert. Jews aren’t happy with the statement and say it threatens the advances made at the Second Vatican Council.
