A very atheist Christmas

When people find out I’m an atheist, the question often comes up about what I do during the Christmas holidays. There is an assumption that atheists don’t ‘do Christmas,’ so they are surprised when I say how much I love it.

Every year I celebrate Christmas exactly the same way as a christian, with the exception of going to church… I think its more tradition, than religious these days.. at least in my country.

Considering that pretty much all of christmas was stolen ... I’m sorry, borrowed from various religions and pagan festivals, it’s not much of a surprise that non-christians celebrate it.  I however call is x-mas, to get rid of the only part, besides going to church, that is christian.

Actually, to clarify, for Larry:  you will need to use something besides Xmas if you wish to remove “Christ” from your term.  This usage arose merely as a shortcut—in the Greek Alphabet, X is “chi” and is in fact, the first letter in “Christ” - his “initial,” so to speak.  Christians (tho many currently are not aware of this and find the usage offensive) have used “ky-mas” to abbreviate the longer spelling for long time now.  %~)

Let’s not forget the real reason for the season…the Winter Solstice. This holiday was originally a celebration to honor the “rebirth of the Sun”. The Christians are the latecomers to the Solstice celebration.

Actually, the real reason for the season would be the axis tilt of the earth. raspberry

I mean lets be real here.. The holiday is as hallmark and entrenched in the needs of economy as anything at this point. It’s about as much bullshit as valentine’s day.. that being said.. I wont lie and say I dislike it.  Gifts and family and great food.. that is great on any level provided you don’t hate your family.  I just have to sit through mass on the eve for an hour with the fam. It seems everyone celebrates it now regardless of religion.. It’s hard to be in society with all of the hub bub and do nothing or tell your kids ‘we don’t believe that around here.’  Jesus is as ridiculous as santa but we all give that up pretty quick. Anyway I am drunk and pretty gay. Any wonder why big time jewish and other such holidays happen at the same time!?!

Personally, I love Christmas. We have the tree, the lights outside, the presents, the big meal, my husband wears a silly-looking Santa hat, I have my elf costume, all of that stuff. I have never felt the need to try and convince my children that there actually is a Santa, elves, flying reindeer, talking snakes, or any other magical creatures. Christmas is a lot of fun. People , atheists and believers alike, would probably benefit from not taking themselves so seriously.

You don’t have to believe in Santa to enjoy the story and tradition that comes with him, most Christians would agree. I feel the same way about the holiday in general. Gathering with family, decorating, cooking, and exchanging gifts is fun! As an atheist, I still put out a nativity. Why? Same reason I put out Santa, its all part of the story.
