Posted: September 10, 2009.

Mr Loong said: “The most visceral and dangerous fault line (in Singapore) is race and religion. Christians can’t expect this to be a Christian society. Muslims can’t expect this to be a Muslim society, ditto with the Buddhists, the Hindus and the other groups.”

It is embarassing to see that Singapore is ahead of the United States in realizing that secular ideals are good for government and societal stability.

Our only hope for survival, really, depends on more leaders promoting this standard. Here’s hoping the example is heeded.

I hope we have more politicians who realize the need of rejecting the religion.

One problem is that American religious nuts (and especially Christians, it seems) are brainwashed to believe that religion is needed to control people’s good decisions. Simply controlling people is more like it. They believe without making a god their primary source of moral value and political righteousness, that the world will somehow become “Smash TV”. The church has been used to control people since the Dark Ages; why do you think they were called that?

Singapore’s prime minister gets it - the global increase in religious fervor is dangerous.

In America, many liberal Christians claim their faith is the source of their morality and, therefore, are reluctant to criticize the spread of religious fervor.  And the President seems to hold a similar view.  It’s interesting to note leadership’s differing perspectives on religiosity.

The human mind is an interesting phenomenon as it can convince itself that it and it alone knows reality. There is one exception it will accept others opinions, cherished beliefs, and like paradigms if they match its beliefs. It is a like attracts like phenomena.

Whether it is Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, advaita, atheist, democrat, republican, capitalism, or whatever this like attracts like is very persuasive. One only has to visit the Internet with its blogs to see this phenomenon in action. Unless this phenomenon is recognized any research can become very susceptible to bias as often the people doing the research and even those that are considered advisors will hold like views of reality.

This phenomenon of the mind is so powerful if anyone comes along with a different view they are chastised even to the point of personal attacks. A new documentary is coming out challenging the love affair Americans have with capitalism and this producer will have to endure many personal attacks.  I suspect even threats on his life.

In American capitalism and patriotism are considered one and the same. I suspect that in America capitalism and nationalism are also entrenched in the American system of beliefs.

There is a bonding effect with this like attracts like phenomena but it can also be dangerous if taken to the extreme such as wars and genocide. An evangelical stance of one’s beliefs is not grounded in certainty but in doubt. Doubt at a subconscious level the mind is not aware of.

Example every new converted Christian brings comfort to this doubting mind but only for a very short period of time therefore the need for more evangelism. The same applies to all those examples mentioned above as like attracts like also brings comfort to the doubting mind.

Let’s hope that we hear more talk like this from other world leaders.
