‘Safer’ not to defrock paedophile priests, says Catholic Church official

Excerpt:

Adrian Child, the director of Catholic Safeguarding Advisory Service (CSAS), told The Tablet that communities were better protected when the Church was able to supervise known abusers and manage their behaviour after the completion of their sentence.

“If there is a body of people around an offender who monitor their day-to-day activities and help manage them adopt a ‘good life’ model, this is more effective than brandishing them on the wider community, which evidence suggests could lead to more offending.”

“If there is a body of people around an offender who monitor their day-to-day activities and help manage them adopt a ‘good-life model…”

Does he mean the same body of people that has been around the offenders the whole time? The same body of people that has allowed the offenders to commit their crimes? Does Adrian Child think we are stupid?

That body of people should be composed mainly of prison guards, in my opinion.

Imagine a kindergarten where they discovered one of the caretakers was a paedophile. As soon as he or she had got out of prison, they immediately hired him back, saying that it was the safest thing to do.
How is this any different?! Except that a priest has more authority and power over the weak because he spouts holy verses and is with “the good guys”.
Makes me absolutely sick to my stomach and full of hatred towards the entire Catholic Church. Every single statement they have made has made their case worse.

The Church would be cheerfully burning these critics at the stake, if they had the power. The will is still there;

Whether it would be a good thing depends on what they actually have the perp doing. If they stick him off in a monastary somewhere, that’s probably a lot better for society in general than having him become yet another of the nearly uncountable sex offenders living relatively anonymously among the general public.

ralph,

Actually, I believe it was always the civil authorities who burned heretics at the stake, Generally speaking, the civil authorities found it useful for everyone to acquiesce to the same religion, and made it the law to do so, on penalty of death. Of course, the church was quite a bit more than tolerant of this state of affairs.

@ Keith:  I completely agree.  If we were talking about druggies- should we let someone who just got out of rehab live with the same druggie friends they had that helped them into the addiction they had?  No!  And considering that statistically speaking- pedophiles NEVER recover, if you let a pedophile back into the same situation they were in before (filled with other people who allowed it, turned thier heads away from the horrible things that were happening, then covered it up) they are just going to revert back to thier previous behavior.

I was standing right in front of Ratzinger’s bronze statue then I realized that it is best not to defrock priests. It is better to let them repent inside the church
