How will Lutherans, heirs to the Protestant Reformation cry of “sola scriptura,” square this decision with Leviticus 20:13 which says “If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall be put to death;  their blood is upon them.” (New Revised Standard Version)?

This should be an entertaining theological pretzel twist to read.

I have very conflicted feelings when a church group takes a small measure toward common decency.  It will comfort a lot of people, and that is a good thing.  But it may also prevent others from taking the necessary step of walking away from their superstition.

I understand the conflict of less-bad religion leading to fewer defections.  However, I believe less and less badness in religion is not only good for the religion and for the unaffiliated, but also moves the religion closer to rationality, which ultimately may be the best way to free the world from the irrationality of today’s religions (and may tomorrow’s religions be free of supernaturalism, etc., !!).
