Is Religion a Reason to Allow Knife-carrying?

Excerpt:

The idea of children being allowed to carry knives while at school sounds like a red rag to a bull. But that is what Sir Mota Singh QC, Britain’s first Asian judge, who is now retired, says should be allowed. Not any old knife - but the ceremonial dagger known as the Kirpan.

The Kirpan is one of five “articles of faith” which also include Kesh (unshorn hair) and Kara (steel bangle) that are worn by practising Sikhs.

Given the UK’s well-publicised problem with knife crime, his suggestion is controversial. It raises the question of how far society should “bend the rules” to accommodate people who wish to practise a religion.

” It raises the question of how far society should “bend the rules” to accommodate people who wish to practise a religion.” How about, not in the slightest way.

Britain has long accepted the traditional Scottish skean dhu knife being carried in public. It was a weapon long ago but has recently become more of an item of jewelery, especially when worn on the stockings which renders it much less effective as a weapon.
I can understand why the kirpan could be considered in the same class. I wore traditional Scottish dress at my daughter’s wedding, skean dhu included, with not a word of protest from the mostly non-Scottish guests.
Anyone using a kirpan, skean dhu, shoe, or umbrella as a weapon should be treated the same as any other violent criminal.

Religious individuals should be allowed to carry imaginary religious weapons to go along with their imaginary gods…similar to air guitars.

Religion does not trump other constitutions as a default. As a manager of a company, when a religious person tells me they can’t work overtime on Sunday due to their religious beliefs, I thank them for their honesty and promptly replace them with someone who can help me run the business, and the business runs 24/7, with no preferential treatment. They need to conform, not the business. This applies for conducting education in public schools. If they can’t adhere to the rules, they need to be educated elsewhere.

Angry Demon`s comment is idiotic. Possession of knives and guns should not be regulated?

legalising the public possession of knives is idiotic. Knives are statistically the more likely culprit in violent crimes than guns.
The kirpan if worn in public should be worn as a symbol, a miniaturised item similar to a jewellery sized crucifix.
Unfortunately zealots will most likely carry the kirpin regardless of legality.
