81% of Scots believe public should not pay for Pope’s visit

Four-fifths of Scots believe the taxpayer should not be helping to foot the bill for Pope Benedict XVI’s state visit to Britain.

New research shows a total of 81% of people in Scotland said because the Pope is a religious figure the public should not be paying for the four-day trip, which begins when he flies into Edinburgh on September 16.

The proportion of people un-happy with the cost to the public purse was higher in Scotland than in the rest of Britain, and the ComRes poll, carried out for public theology think-tank Theos, also found that apathy surround-ing the state visit is particularly high north of the Border, where four in five said they had no personal interest in his arrival.

Why should the majority of Scots have to pay for visits and trips by religious figures, the pope or anyone, if they didn’t ask for them and don’t want to?  ( Here in my country we are constantly battling for the separation of church and State.)  Of course I totally agree that it’s more-than wrong.

And pretending that the pope is somehow a government leader is ridiculous.  Would we all then be expected to pay for visits by Islam’s imams, who really ARE directing their governments?

Perhaps those 19% of Scots who want it would or could or should be the ones to donate or pay for the event…. as one does for a benefit or concert, etc. by whoever plans to support or attend…  which works for the entertaiinment industry and political candidates…

When the coalition government took over they announced that there would be cuts all over the budget in order to reduce the national deficit.

So we now have reduced the amount we spend on defence, education and healthcare (to name but a few), but we can still find a few million to fund the visit of an advocator of an ancient story book? This is shameful.

Around 16% of Scots are Roman Catholic. This might explain most of the 19% who favour the public purse being used.

Don’t ask Catholics alone to pay for their own religious leader in Scotland. That would make you a bigot.
