Hello everyone! I am new to this forum. I suppose it would be helpful to tell you a bit about myself.

I am a 30 year old father of one wonderful and skeptical son, living in Pennsylvania (in the US). I am an atheist. I am rather opposed to religion, and rather inclined towards science and reason. My most recent employment was with Children’s Services, a very taxing and depressing job, but a necessary one. I no longer work there, and have been struggling to find employment since then. With a larger than usual amount of spare time, I have been trying to get connected with other non-believers, write letters to the editor in the local paper criticizing religion, and do my best as an individual to promote rational inquiry.

I look forward to some great conversations, great friends, and plenty of learning here at Project Reason. I have chosen my username, Darth Ratzinger, as a reference to the uncanny resemblance between the current pope and Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine, both in their physical appearance and their leadership style. If I didn’t know that Star Wars is fictional (much like the Bible, Koran, Book of Mormon, etc), I might have difficulty discriminating between them.

About the only thing that one should take seriously on this forum is to enjoy interacting with others.  Educating them or being educated by them, may happen, but better for that goal to go to school. It is also useful to be able to laugh at oneself as readily as at others.

Nah!  There’s nothing to fear here.  Most people are pretty open minded.  You already know of at least one exception.  We have a few others like that, but you’ll do fine.

Carl Sagan:  “How is it that hardly any major religion has looked at science and concluded, “This is better than we thought! The Universe is much bigger than our prophets said, grander, more subtle, more elegant. God must be even greater than we dreamed”? Instead they say, “No, no, no! My god is a little god, and I want him to stay that way.”

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I participate in another atheist forum that gets pretty rough at times, so I’m sure it won’t be too difficult to acclimate here.

Thanks! Funny that you should say that too. I recall that, during the previous US Presidential Election, President Obama commented that Pennsylvanians cling to guns and religion, and that he got a lot of heat for it. As a lifelong Pennsylvanian, I would have to say that what the President said is true. That’s probably why it upset so many people. Sure, Pennsylvania is not all a bunch of drooling right wing religious fanatics, but there are indeed quite a few of them, and they are typically loud and ugly enough to be noticed.
