The purist love I ever had was for my dog Brendan. He got old and smelly and I lovingly carried him from room to room because he had arthritis. My husband should be so lucky.
Dogs are great companions, good for hunting, guarding and together with a few veggies make a tasty stew when times are hard…very versatile.
And I was just informed by a friend that the holes in skulls were probably not for ritual practice, but for extracting the brain for “brain tanning” the ancient way of tanning leather. Plus their skins make warm blankets. But the eye thing is neat.

I think this thread is going to the dogs.
RUFF!...
Hey, watch the language. My small dog is watching.
Besides the eye thing, we also understand dog voices, and they understand us.
Think of Lassie. Bark, bark, bark! Hey, c’mere; something to show you. Or whine, whine; something sad or painful. Or grrrrrrrr; watch it, buddy. My sheltie sounds like a wookie. Very expressive little lady.
Dogs can understand quite a number of words, especially by intonation and our accompanying body language.
