Racism, bigotry and hatred are alive and well in America, especially the south.

I grew up in the south and my fathers family still resides there. This is actually no surprise to me. Still extremely disturbing. I have always wondered where the mental insecurity comes from to cause such hate from people.

We may never know.

Imagine the culture shock of being raised in a suburb of San Francisco and moving to the Deep Red in your early 20s. At least the fact I was in the military for a while kinda mitigated the most dramatic aspects of the social climate shift.

Now, 25 years later ... yeah, this doesn’t surprise me. It still disgusts and saddens me, but no surprise ... which only deepens the disgust and sadness it evokes.

As social creatures we are required to help members of our in group. Racism, tribalism, and other forms of bigotry are negative consequences of defining what this is.
