I’ve always been a fan of the genre of novels taking place in a world virtually run by “Big Brother” or a Unitarian, Totalitarian, Dictator. I just wanted to start a discussion about the worlds fascination with the “Rebel” protagonist. Is there anyone who openly routes for “Big Brother” to come out on top? Or are we really just a nation that loves to see a bad guy get beat?

Welcome Alek. Glad to see your interest, being so young. Yep, you’re the future, do us proud. We have another young’un here somewhere. Dang, I forgot his moniker. [See what old age gets you. Help me out guys. The smart Buddist kid.]

Nowadays, we’re a nation that can’t tell the bad guys from the good guys.

Since the other two respondants didn’t address your post but were more interested in your age, I’ll take a stab at an answer.

Yes.  Republicans and religious nitwits who beat you up with their (un)holy book of dogmatic doctine for not getting with their program.

Thanx so much guys, oh, and slipknot, yeah. I hate politics with a passion, but I never got the obsession with the arch-type rebel hero. Thanx for posting.

Ok, Skip, I’ll have a go. I don’t read SF, just S, but anyway…

Electric: ... a discussion about the worlds (sic) fascination with the “Rebel” protagonist. Is there anyone who openly routes (sic) for “Big Brother” to come out on top? Or are we really just [???] a nation that loves to see a bad guy get beat?

I don’t think that you as a nation are alone in loving “to see a bad guy get beat”. Any normal person is that way inclined. If fiction or cinema that depicted the bad guy repeatedly winning became the norm, I doubt people would read/watch it. Humans are not like that - they are moral beings. They want good to win out. Admittedly, notions of what is ‘good’ vary but not to the extent that I think you are talking about. If Hitler was a big brother ‘rebel protagonist’ of the sort we might want to see win ,(if that’s not oxymoronic) then so was the Rev Jim Jones, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Bundy… No one wants to see those big brother shits win. To want them to win would be abnormal. You would have to be a psychopath or hypocrit like them to want them to win.

So, whilst there is a fascination with these revolting creatures, no normal person would want to see them win.

If, on the other hand, you are talking about ‘rebel protagonists’ of the ‘romantic hero’ variety like Robin Hood, well, yeah, people do like to see them win. That’s normal.

How’s that., Skip? I think I addressed the OP, no?

Yep, hope so. Good kid. Electric is off to better things, I see ... or has a short attention span. I did answer the second question.

Had to laugh at this…Aleksander’s age was mentioned, and he gets “Slipknot” out of Skipshot. Hopefully you old guys know who Slipknot is.

Oh, and welcome Aleksander.

That’s pretty good, but the sociopaths you cite declared themselves outsiders to the system and played the victim card, so they don’t fit the “Big Brother” definition.  Perhaps a better example of people who cheer for Big Brother is Fox News and their viewers.  Take for example the Occupy Movement and how Fox portrays them as ragtag hippies who need a shower and a job.  While there may be some truth to that portrayal, Fox is definitely pro-Big Brother and supporting the 1% in this debate.

My flip response earlier was because the question is too broad of scope to answer concisely, and I was testing the intent of Aleksander.

Yeah, that’s why I didn’t attempt an answer in my welcome. And it was none too clear what he was really asking.

I had a bit of a giggle at your ‘flip’ response. And yes, your examples of ‘big brother’ are better.
