Found this on another blog and tried to figure out what to make of it.
http://www.case.edu/med/microbio/andrulis.htm

It appears he has figured out the origin of life -

“The theoretical framework unifies the macrocosmic and microcosmic realms, validates predicted laws of nature, and solves the puzzle of the origin and evolution of cellular life in the universe.”

It sounds ridiculous so I thought it might make for an interesting read, but - I can’t. It’s mind-numbingly long and full of made up terms and funny equations.  I gave up a few minutes in.  I’m still curious, though, if it’s really worthy of being published.

”...an incommensurable, trans-disciplinary, neologistical, axiomatic theory of life from quantum gravity to the living cell.”

Wow!

The rest of the jargon filled speel would only mean anything to some other specialist in his field.

I look forward to seeing the theory.

The phrase “word salad” comes to mind.

Actually Rob, I look forward to it too. Of course, I haven’t the foggiest what he’s talking about. According to Dawkins, most biologists are moving toward the RNA World Theory as the key step in the origin of life so discoveries in this area have got to be interesting until and unless they break down. No doubt RNA research is ramping up. This guy seems young enough so that if a full reconstruction of events in the lab is to occur within the next few decades as Dawkins thinks is likely, this guy may be the one. Man, I doubt I’ll be alive to see it but hopefully my kid will.

Thanks, Burt.

Why am I not surprised? With a line like ”...an incommensurable, trans-disciplinary, neologistical, axiomatic theory of life from quantum gravity to the living cell” my post-modernist bullshit detectors started twitching straight away.

And Answerer, I too hope that in the not too distant future well come up with something that explains life’s origins. i believe we will eventually. I’d love to be able to poke my tongue out at the creationists and IDers. But, as you say, I don’t expect to be around long enough to have that pleasure. Science is not like religion. Science is hard and requires dedication and years of work built on the work of previous generations of scientists. With science, secrets aren’t just ‘revealed’. That’s why I’m always dubious when someone pops up out of nowhere with a theory of everything. Such ‘theories’ usually turn out to be theories of everything and nothing.

Still, it will be interesting to see where the RNA research goes. It is progressing. I read something recently about it. I’ll find it an post it.

Cheers

Rob

This should be in the psychology category, not science.

Thanks for setting us straight, burt. Like I said, I had no idea what it was about, just keyed in on RNA. We’ll get there eventually.
