Attention Moderators

You know that Project Reason has many members that never visit and never post any comments.
You have everyone’s Email address. Write to all the “no shows” advertising the exciting new threads that we have and try entice them to take a look and post their opinions.
Offer a prize for the member who recognizes the Secret Screen Name of Sam Harris on this forum.

Try and generate some interest. Maybe we can grow the Atheist, Agnostic, Freethinker community of non religious people.

This forum is home to a small community of 20-30 posters. Many have come and gone- maybe a couple hundred all together.

The other 223,000+ are all spambots. The good news is that they are already non-theists. But you can contact them to be certain. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you. Need a cheap wedding dress?

Before the dress you need the penis and breast enhancers.

This is pathetic. I can’t believe you spend all the effort and energy that you do to protect 30 posters from all this.  You should get the Project Reason Medal Of Honor.

I hope Nhoj and Andrew request additional assistance if they feel in need of any. The upper-level administrators could once again open up moderator status to anyone who seems to have the patience to do cyber battle. I once again would not volunteer, mostly out of my profound ignorance of modern computer software.

(Andrew):  Let’s not forget CalmWind who does yeoman’s duty keeping Bobo at bay.
It’s really not so bad…sometimes we’ll get hit with scattershot, but generally we can run down the page, spot the spam (usually an unfamiliar screen name) and sweep them out the door in a couple of minutes.  If we do that every hour or so, things stay pretty clean.
And the pay is good.
I’d only ask that you not use the “Report this post” button for spam (unless something gets buried in a thread and it’s obvious that we missed it) so we don’t spend time checking posts that have probably already been deleted.

Like Andrew says, Mr. Wind is the programming specialist. We just have delete buttons.

I wonder if the thousands of spam-less bots are simply there to make the few posting bots harder to find. Mostly, it is a handful of hands-on posters trying hard to look genuine. Like Ms. Colon just now… that was almost a coherent, topic-related post. But it is spam. And hence, insincere.

Smart123 is definitely a person. Mr. 3 puts up 12 to 20 posts even while I am deleting up the list right behind him. He’ll wait until I log off (I get bounced off when skype rings) and post another dozen. It is a senseless personal vendetta. These repeat offenders have to realize that this site is defended. They always log in to a zero post count. You would think they would seek out other prey, but no, they keep coming back. What’s it for?

I send PM’s while they are at it saying, “We hate you and your golf clubs. Go away!” I got one back saying they have a right to earn a living. Where do you find a job like that? Are these Chrysler engineers with nothing left to do?

I have become fascinated/repulsed by the blather-speak of the ads and the kind of mind that composes them.
Years ago, I spent many long hours trapped in a little office waiting for convention events to play out. I shared it with the Banquet Manager. There was a young women who did a short stint as an Assistant manager. She was impersonal, barely spoke and spent endless hours typing in the office. We all thought she was in college and working on a thesis or something. Everyone knew I was writing a brain book but she typed a lot louder than I did. Where I could type for an hour, she could type for four or five. If she stepped away, she hid the screen.

One day, she left it out. We had to peek. It was sales blather. Pages and pages of it. High class stuff, too. It was blather interspersed with drivel that was nicely paced in a mundane tone with mundane words that create a clear context of vacuity wrapped in an overall flavor of playful nonsense. I had to admire it. As well, it was like Wendy in The Shinning looking at Jack’s Great American Novel. Or Col. Kurtz “the horror… the horror…” She had to know we saw it. We never looked at her the same again. She didn’t last long… got a sales job, I think.

BM has a talent for blather-speak that shows in his posting. It similarly drips and oozes with insincerity.

As a member of the Spam Workforce, I am repulsed at the black hole of time and effort that is “Desperate Advertising”. It is worse than all the fuel we waste driving mega-tons of kitty litter around.

At the same time, I am having a sort of roadside-accident fascination with it. Just like you guys with BM.

Nhoj Morley likes to take a philosophical interest in spammers, and contemplate their motives.
I just pull the trigger.

(Andrew):  A spambot is the product of a computer program that registers on internet forums (at least) for advertisement purposes.  They sell things like wedding dresses, golf clubs and designer clothing.

I’d like to meet a person one day, who was directly convinced by a spambot to buy something.

They’ve convinced me that I need to buy a wedding dress, just to see what I’m missing.

That’s ridiculous. I had no idea the ratio of actual posters. Whats even more ridiculous is all the money you could have saved with owins power accessories…
