(Zen) Buddhism, Taoism, Sufism, Mysticism, Theism, Deism, XYZ-ism… are really just language games. That realization is the culmination of 8 years of Buddhist study and practice, for which I’m truly grateful.

As you go through life, make this your goal: watch the doughnut, not the hole.

I eat the doughnut not the hole.

No one to eat, all hole.  That’s Zen.

There is my truth.  There is your truth.  There is the real truth.  Neither of us can claim that third. Maybe if we talk, we’ll both get closer.

Every happy hour the hedgehog comes to the Pig and Whistle for a McIvor in water and says the same thing to whoever will listen.  No one ever wants to hear his one great thing.  Finally, on a quiet day, the bartender relented, said, “Yes,” and prepared for a long-winded harangue.  The hedgehog reached into his wallet and slid a photo across the counter.

What happened next? What was inside the wallet? Come on….

I never know what unsmoked is talking about. I mean, most of the time, I really don’t get it. He’s on a different space ship than I am.

Bruce,

It’s true we are on different spaceships.  Here, 3-day-old corpses don’t come back to life.  The weather can’t be controlled by shouting at it.

Can I get to ride either of your spaceship and get to understand what you guys are getting into?

Create your own spaceship.  It’s better and no one can beat it.

The message I get from Buddhism is to be aware of one’s prejudices.  I think the idea is not to stop thinking or caring, but to stop getting caught up in pop wisdom and to act more out of compassion.

Something like “slow and steady wins the race.”

I’m real big on the it’s the journey, not a destination and the don’t struggle against the wave, ride it ethics, but I think of them more in terms of Zen and Taoism than Buddhism, which I guess is a pretty arbitrary thing on my part.
