What’s a fag?

An English cigarette;  evidently god favors an English no smoking policy.

I say fuck any proposal to ban foul language. How and the hell are fuckwits like me supposed to express ourselves without it? red face

But it is for the children. We don’t want children saying “god hates fags” in a mean way, we want them to say “god hates fags” in a nice way so we can feel righteous about it.

GAD,
Are your reading what you just wrote?  This is an open forum.  Some person who hears about project reason and wants to learn more about our point of view googles project Reason and then visits the associated forum. he/she then picks this thread to read.  He reads the line you just wrote “But it is for the children. We don’t want children saying “god hates fags” in a mean way, we want them to say “god hates fags” in a nice way so we can feel righteous about it”
Do you appreciate how immature this sounds?

What do you think that person is going to think when they read this…Do you think that their going to consider us as educated people looking to promote critical thinking?  Eudamonia’s comment is no better than yours.

Look I have alot in common with you guys.  I don’t want to be ostracized from discussion.  Other people have made similar comments as me and have ended up being mobbed… like we did to genvra or whatever her name was. but someone needs to speak up.  I bet there are other people who feel the same as me but are afraid to say something because they don’t want to be made fun of. My point is that we are undermining ourselves by using the words we use.

I had to go to the Jr. High to get my kids (K and 2nd)) who practice their theater there. When I was walking up there was a group of girls on cell phones yelling into their phones and at each other about who wants to fuck who, who likes to suck, who likes whose ass etc, they were cursing like proverbial sailors at the top of their lungs no less and that adults with small children were walking through them did not bother them the least. These were like 11-12 year of girls.

Critical thinking skills have very little if anything to do with the use of foul language.

Using foul language is a personality trait and has nothing to do with intelligence.

It is a simple matter of taste.

For fucks sake I didn’t even use a single cursive in that and you still have a problem with it. See how quickly censorship goes down hill.

And the point is that the Westborough “god hates fags” church isn’t saying anything different then the Catholic church with respect to homosexuality, the Catholic church just says it more nicely so they can feel more righteous about the hatred they teach to children.

I have no problem with it.  Its entertaining to me.  It just doesn’t promote opened minded non-judgemental discussion.  It does not make you look good… its childish… but it definetly has entertainment value.  You are correct you didn’t use a single “fuck”... nice job wink except of course when you pointed that fact out to me.

Not gonna happen. At least I don’t see it happening. You’re not a Bobo type, and that’s pretty much what it takes to be ostracized in here ... I guess that depends upon exactly what you mean by ostracized regarding an online forum though. Disagreements tend to escalate if the issue isn’t either resolved or if both parties (all ... most maybe?) can’t detach from the issue and deal with (accept) disagreement. Personally I tend to detach rather quickly if it looks like it’s going there—that doesn’t necessarily mean I stop participating, but normally it does.

jdrnd - 06 December 2010 10:34 AM

Other people have made similar comments as me and have ended up being mobbed… like we did to genvra or whatever her name was. but someone needs to speak up.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that’s not a very good comparison, man ... at least not as far as I can tell as yet.

jdrnd - 06 December 2010 10:34 AM

I bet there are other people who feel the same as me but are afraid to say something because they don’t want to be made fun of.

Could be, but I kinda doubt it. I’d argue it’s impertinent in any case though. A lot of believers could be described the same way.

My point is that we are undermining ourselves by using the words we use.

Yes, it is ... and so far most involved in this thread are disagreeing with you.

Fine, I guess you deserve a serious response, although, as you note, this subject has been brought up before.

(1)  Many of us are refugees from the Sam Harris Forum, an abandoned little corner of cyberspace where we didn’t have to worry about anyone dropping in to read what we were saying.  We developed very informal ways of communicating among friends.  Well, among friends and Champion.

(2)  It is certainly true that each of us can communicate without using “foul” language;  we do it every day in our work.  If I filed a pleading referring to a prosecutor as a “narcissistic piece of shit” I would be held in contempt and lucky to get away with a fine.  So, I find other ways to say the same thing.  But, it takes longer, and I have to pace around the office for a few minutes to let my blood pressure go down before I come up the other words.

(3)  Most importantly, there are only three volunteer moderators;  it is asking a lot of them to police every post for “foul” words.

(4)  Perhaps even more importantly, nobody here knows exactly what the point of this Forum is;  we don’t wear wristbands saying WWSHD, and nobody pretends to know the revealed word of Sam Harris;  if he wants us to be ambassadors of atheism, and talk pretty, I expect he’ll let us know.  Maybe this is just a scientific experiment in self-governance, in which case you should continue to press your point—well, you should anyway, because until we get further word, pressing one’s point seems to be what this forum is about.  Good luck.

yes, you are right… but its all of the usual posters that use this type of language.

and one more thing.  The right thing to do is not always supported by a majority.  Even if we unanamously vote to repeal the law of gravity, the force of gravity will still exist.

Although, and I apologize in advance because this is both off topic and not helping at all, this constraint is evidently not felt by people representing themselves.  This is from a pleading actually filed in the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit (Hupp v Educational Credit Management Association, No. 08-56403 Dkt.Ent. 52)

Plaintiff has news for these slime ball, piece of shit, ass clownjudges (Bowie, Canby,
Thomas and Fletcher-this means you) that tlzink they are going to rig the system and railroad the
poor and innocent- such as blocldng the discovery process so the poor cnnnot defend themselves,
commit perjury in their orders and a host of other constitutional violations, and do it with
implnitp that is simply not going to happen in this case. You cock suckers are now on notice.

In keeping with jdrnd’s point, I think this guy lost.
