Okay guys: I’m initiating defense tactics codename “Buddha52” (Buddha, as it’s what I’m defending, and 52 as in my favorite football player Ray Lewis [who btw turned his life around with Christianity]). Please stand by while format and employ a plan of action in a new thread titled “In Defense of Buddhism”, which will be launched later tonight (will start as soon as I finish homework).
ECurb: What kills me is that unsmoked gets a pass on this “bright moon in the sky” crap, and I get a loud chorus of WOOOO when I suggest that the universe is a thought. Unsmoked is more wrapped up in Woo than anyone here, but he gets pats on the back because he’s not a theist. “The inherent mind is Buddha.” There is definitely a double standard around here.
I agree with Bruce on this one. His “Universe is a thought” was ridiculed by everyone who CHOSE to interpret the comment literally. (Atheist fundies tend to do that) They also tend to be much gentler with Buddhism.
I don’t recall saying, “Universe is a thought.” I said, “The universe is conscious.”
To me this is just a matter of fact statement that doesn’t need belief. We are aspects of the universe and we are conscious. The universe has consciousness. Maybe it’s a form of self-consciousness when we realize that the universe is our larger body. I can’t see why anyone, atheist or theist would take issue with this, or call it woo. Isn’t woo an idea that calls for belief? Is 2 + 2 = 4 woo? How about a tree?
That’s like saying that the algae is the self-consciousness of the rock it is on.
Come come. You’re conscious and the algae isn’t. The algae is a phase of the universe on its way to you. (consciousness). You are consciousness for the algae. In the long view, it (the algae) is part of your (our) gestation.
gestation 2 : conception and development esp. in the mind
Surely you don’t think we appeared here suddenly, formed of dust and divine breath?
“Not hammer-strokes, but dance of the water,
sings the pebbles into perfection.” - Rabindranath Tagore
GAD I think you misunderstand, I like Bruce’s woo. If all Christians followed Bruce’s version of Christianity then Christianity would be a don’t care for me.
Yes, I did misunderstand. Sorry.
Unsmoked: I don’t recall saying, “Universe is a thought.” I said, “The universe is conscious.”
You didn’t say it. Ecurb said it. Saying “The Universe is conscious” is vastly different from saying “The Universe has consciousness in it.”
GAD: I think a good example that has been on other threads recently is the Golden Rule. It seems that all schools of woo want to attribute it to their woo master. My view is that mutual reciprocity and reciprocal altruism as hugely beneficial to human affairs is completely self-evident and trying to sell me on the greatness of Confucius, Jesus, Buddha etc because they stated the obvious is just woo.
Even the “Golden Rule” can be tricky to implement. I, for instance, prefer to know the truth, regardless of how it may impact me. I don’t care if I’m angered, depressed or insulted by the information conveyed, but, I want to know it. However, I am aware that people exist….some of them in my own family…who prefer to ignore truths they find upsetting.
I guess I’m using the Golden Rule when I refrain from telling them things, but I would absolutely hate it if I were treated in a similar fashion. This also evades an important question….is it loving to allow someone to deceive themselves if that is their wish? I suppose so, but, it is an issue that could be debated.
Unsmoked: I don’t recall saying, “Universe is a thought.” I said, “The universe is conscious.”
You didn’t say it. Ecurb said it. Saying “The Universe is conscious” is vastly different from saying “The Universe has consciousness in it.”
To say that “The Universe has consciousness in it,” is a form of division. You don’t say, for example, “I have consciousness in me.” You say, “I am conscious.”
The universe, as the name suggests, is one thing. It doesn’t have consciousness as a separate thing or phenomenon. The universe is our larger body.

You have a point, BB.
I gave up on beating Unsmoked over the head for his deranged, bliss ninny nonsense, simply because he doesn’t have the common courtesy to be insulted when someone calls him a blithering idiot.
So, just for the record, I absolutely loath Buddha squealers.
I guess it’s the old “hang-around-long-enough-and-you-will-become-part-of-the-group” bullshit.
That, and the nauseating tendency to give Buddhism a pass because Sam dropped E one too many times and thought that staring at your navel for 8 months would help the world somehow.
This forum as a whole has become way too Kum Bah fucking Yah anyway.
We need to reinstate harsh corporal punishment.
Oh Salty one, why hast thou forsaken us?
I say we lash the serenely smiling dill holes until they drop.

OK, now this is the sadistic SH forum that I originally grew to love. More Salty & Sander, more goosing the gander, more blood in the stew, more screwin’ the Woo.
It is the violence of unalterably opposed positions that brings clarity. War!

Schopenhauer mused that life without pain is meaningless.
In my boundless altruism I merely want to give people’s lives lots and lots of meaning.

If you respect existentialist authors, you should respect the Buddha.

Who said I respect that dreary old fraud?
I’ll quote Barry Manilow if it’ll get me a cheap laugh.
Greetings, neonate.

This may be one of those cases where the recipient…not the message…is flawed. Or else, Lapin is right and you’re an idiot.

I think of Lapin as the Brother Mario of the Atheists. Has a flair for words, and a wee bit crazed.
But, I ain’t wrangling with him. I’m afraid to tell him I like Rod Stewart.

Meaning people suck. All that matters is conquest. Give me a nation of Christians with guns, and a few Jews (you simply must have Jews), and I will conquer. What else matters?
If you respect existentialist authors, you should respect the Buddha.
I respect no author. I respect Hernan Cortes.
Better than Pizarro. Cortes actually had a semi-conscious, demonstrated in his will when he stated his uncertainty in whether it was morally right to own Native American slaves. In his will, he asked his son to consider the matter very carefully and delicately. Surprised you don’t like Pizarro, considering right before his death he drew a cross on the ground and said “Jesus.”

Pizarro’s fine, but Cortes was closer to home (TEJAS!!!!). In either case, Jesus inspired great conquests. Imagine the bounty of the Americas being absolutely wasted on the backward native culture. From Canada to Chile, Jesus inspired Dominionism. And you are the beneficiary, like it or not.

Backward native culture? As if burning “witches” alive on the stake only after torturing them isn’t backwards, right? They would’ve got out of the rut they were in. If we found the New World 400 years from when we originally did they’d probably have been just as advanced. Their cultures weren’t all backwards. They may seem weird and uncivilized, but that’s not what they thought. They were content with their culture, but then we just came in there and stripped everything away from them and continued to expound our own land for god, glory and gold, or manifest destiny. Much like what is happening in the Islamic sphere of influence.
My “In Defense of Buddhism” has been posted. (the first part at least).
