I am from San Jose California, just beautiful here! I used to live in Illinois way out in the middle of nowhere, stuck in corn fields. I moved as soon as I could, just needed my carer to take off. And that is has.

So where in the world are you from?!

The Forum Diary

This is the first entry in a new ongoing feature called The Forum Diary.

No big issues here… just forum stories. Yours, mine… it’s a forum-forum.

A few weeks ago, I was stuck here on the phone and watching the forum and up sprang a boboquake. So, I deleted it and went over to Harris to find that Mr. Hippo had sprayed over there, too. Mr. Hippo was online, so this quickly turned into a post/delete contest. (My call went on forever) The seige got tiresome after 5 minutes but I was determined to defend the fort. I was deleting bobo’s only 8 seconds old. Soon, I was logged into both forums on two screens. It got really silly. Maybe 50 or 60 tries. Finally, Mr. Hippo logged off after 40 minutes of hitting the Harris Fire Wall. It was strangely satisfying.

Since then, I wait for it to log off and wander away and then I’ll clean up the mess.

Imagine the excitement… the anticipation… Mr. Hippo must feel as he huddles over his fresh boboquake, clicking every few minutes to make sure I haven’t turned it into a picture of SpongeBob, giggling in the pure ecstasy of knowing that a useless, incoherent ramble we’ve all seen before is safely ensconced where it seems to belong. I almost hate to snap off the emotional high but he always post again.

Should the new “ban” button ever arrive, Mr. Hippo will be the first to feel its wrath. And his 400 aliases.

Vacation across the Pacific

Having just got back from a 15,000+ mile trip, half of that by ship, across 28 days and 8 countries, some reflections:

1. I’m quite glade to live in the U.S.
2. Australia would be worth another visit, except they got the plans wrong and the cars have the steering wheel on the wrong side. Maybe that’s why they drive on the wrong side of the road. They also speak funny.
3. The South Sea Islands of New Caledonia, Fiji and Samoa make for some nice pictures best viewed in an air-conditioned ship with room service.
4. The Pacific Ocean is bigger than Lake Michigan.
5. Hawaii is lovely but a small house like mine here costs more than I’ve made in 50 years.
6. My bucket is now empty, with a huge hole in the bottom. I’ve no more buckets.

1. They distract you with television

2. They suggest that snacking is a good cure for boredom

3. They encourage the use of drugs and alcohol

4. Rather than rewarding good behavior they give you free treats for throwing temper tantrums and making unreasonable demands

5. They pretend to love you but in reality see you simply as a source of income

6. They never ask you to pick up after yourself

Happy Mother’s Day—Mothers in the Military

This was the lead story in the Denver Post for Mother’s Day:

Soon after Miriam Beg gave birth to her son, she was deployed to Iraq with the U.S. Army, so she left baby Michael with her mother-in-law.

“I was really worried to leave my child so young,” said Beg, 29, “just 4 months (old).”

In the combat zone, she received photos and e-mails documenting his milestones.

“I missed his first step, his first word, his first everything,” she said. “By the time I came back, he was over a year old.”

I’m not sure what the official policies of the US military are around soldiers who become mothers. Yes it is a choice. But is it good social policy? Are new recruits given adequate info on what lies ahead if they become mothers while serving in the military?
