SAN FRANCISCO, May 20—Physicians gathering for the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting here were greeted with a noisy street protest by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), an offshoot of the Church of Scientology.

From its earliest days in the 1950s, Scientologists have waged a campaign accusing the psychiatric profession of a range of abuses. Now conducted under the CCHR’s banner, the campaign currently portrays psychiatry as an “industry of death.”

Demonstrations like the one at this year’s meeting have become a fixture at the annual gatherings.

In a 10 month investigation, Sunday Night (TV Programme) infiltrated one of the world’s most worrying new cults.
This cult is in Australia and it’s spreading, it has been described as “worse than WACO”.
Investigators have gone inside the cult’s headquarters to meet the leaders and their followers who claim their lives have been changed forever.
You can see how vulnerable men, women, and children are brought to breaking point by the cults teachings. Most seem on the edge of a mental breakdown.
The members seen mostly convinced that their leader is Jesus and that others in their community are Mary or other individuals mentioned in the gospels. They are encouraged to leave their families and spouses and find their true soul mates.
What I noticed that caused most thought for me was the marked difference between the cults leader and his followers, his big smiles and their emotional despondency.

Perhaps this is what Alain de Botton has in mind and JT’s observation profound, perhaps even a little prophetic. Might Atheism become a Cult and the perception of pure Science become a blur? That seems to be the forced strategy that all but the most fundamentalist notions of religion is taking.

We all require some sort of a social group in our lives. Many people use work relations, others use family and some have a local bar they regularly frequent. But to a great extent, social relationships are most often met in churches. Getting people to move from a religion to an absence of social interaction is requiring a greater leap than many are willing to make.

Now sure, the fully independent thinkers easily toss religion and the groups that sheeple stupidity as a trade off for social acceptance, but this is only a small subset of humanity. If we want to let an extended mass of people understand and adhere to a rational way of life, then we need to teach this just like churches are teaching the irrational mythology of their religions.

Can we do it? Yes. If Lafayette Ronald Hubbard could be successful pushing his fiction, then we could be at least as successful, and hopefully far more successful if we begin teaching about reality.
Should we do it? Yes, we have had about 300 years of science progress this time, and historically we see that the religions eventually refocus and bounce back whenever science and rational thinking triumphed over religion.

I posed a question to a JW friend I while back. It was in regards to the NWT. It is obvious that they felt that all other translations were not correct, but there is a question they have yet to answer. Why is it that when they translated and rewrote the Bible they did not reconsider the canon to be wrong too? Since Christians obviously got the translations wrong, why did they also not doubt the order of the books and the 15 books that were left out of the Christian Bible? What are your thoughts?

In a talk she gave at a conference held by the Center for Inquiry, she talks about the Office of Special Affairs (OSA) and the Guardian’s Office (GO) and the deaths of several members brought about by the mental abuse they endured in their years with the church. Nancy herself had a breakdown after a long and intense interrogation she received for having communicated with an SP (declared suppressive person).

Mike Rinder has an exclusive interview with Australian tv about the abuses he suffered at the hands of Scientology leader David Miscavige, and the abuses he says he was made to inflict on others through intimidation. He also talks about how he was forced to handle the fallout after the BBC interview with British journalist John Sweeney. Tommy Davis became the official spokesman for the cult after this. “You have to lie because there’s nothing else that you can do.”

He also has some interesting things to say about Miscavige’s relationship with Tom Cruise.
