Why is the video contest restricted to residents of the US, UK, and Canada?

December 20, 2009.

We are very sorry that this is the case. However, ensuring that our terms of use, privacy policy, and contest rules comply with the laws of every country would be prohibitively expensive. In fact, it costs several thousand dollars per country—and the penalties for being out of compliance can be quite stern (e.g. millions of dollars in fines and years of imprisonment). Again, we are not at all satisfied with such restricted eligibility for our contests, and we hope to grow more inclusive in the future.

the reason seems logical.. i always wondered why only to us uk and canada and such developed countries only ... .......  And so many organization and companies are doing world wide competition so easily..  hope next time .. our country too be added ...

Canadian Law is based on UK law as is Australia and New Zealand. There is an additional 25 million or so that could be picked up relatively easily. Ideas per capita from this region are higher than North America or Britain. Our relative geographic isolation and lack of historic baggage allow us to think out of the box.

Greg, that’s an incredibly ignorant thing to say.

A dissapointment indeed, especially given that high percentage atheism is widespread in north and central europe.
Can we not handle other countries by having people submit their entry accepting conditions with a waiver of resident claims within their actual country of residence?  I look forward to finding a way.

I’ve seen other contests that, due to the reasons stated here, cannot issue prizes to countries not included, but nevertheless allow everyone to participate in the contest.  Should someone outside of the legally allowed country win, they cannot claim cash prizes, but are publicly acknowledged.  Cash prize goes 2nd place winner if they’re in the legal countries, or 3rd place, etc..

Just wanted to say that I would definitely be participating in this contest if it was open to Australian residents. Maybe Australia could be next on the list if there is enough interest from over here? Keep up the good work PR.

Interesting that pretty much anyone can enter something like Design Against Fur (at http://www.infurmation.com) or AgIdeas’ NewStar competition (http://www.agideas.net) - in which prizes are quite a bit less - yet we can’t enter something as universally important as Project Reason. Surely something has been overlooked here.

I agree with all those that would like to participate even if they are not elegible for cash prices. In Mexico we urgently need to promote secular values and I guess the same is needed at most countries.
Maybe all members who are not US, OK and Canada residents could get together and establish a special chapter inside Reason-Project.

Another Aussie voice here.  We’re a very Atheist nation - and I think if you invest a little extra to stretch the coverage (which shouldn’t be difficult if you already have the UK on board) you won’t be disappointed with the results.

Yet another Aussie I am. I’ve been waiting so long for a video competition in which I could properly express how I feel about reason, religion and critical thinking, and it’s pretty damn disappointing to be unable to enter this one.

Hi there fellow Aussies. How about we do our own? No prize money of course. I reckon I could work on some book prizes instead though. Contact me through our website if you’re interested. If I get more than 10 people interested I’ll run it here.

Another interested Australian.

The video contest is about getting people to think, so how about doing some of that yourself. Make a video and get a friend in one of the allowed countries to make the submission for the contest.

There is always a way to solve a problem.

There is nothing to stop people from other countries making a video if you have a good idea and feel passionate about it, stick it on you tube. Maybe the nice people at project-reason may even help plug it for you, if you ask nicely and your videos any good…

Yet more ways to exclude the developing world from everything… Another case: the rich countries are against piracy, but there’s no way in our countries to legally buy lots of stuff (download movies, music, etc., for example), so what do you expect us to do? Oh yeah, you have access to the Internet, but please don’t use it… I’m from Costa Rica, Central America.

If only Australia were included, we seem to have an overplus of cognisant cobbers and savvy sheilas here. Though, statistically speaking, one of us here is likely to be a collingwood supporter, so we can’t be trusted. Maybe it is for the best…

On a serious note, keep up the good work project reason and please include us Aussies next time if REASONable!

I think it’s a great pity that those societies most riven with religious superstition fall outside your conversation, i.e. Roman Catholic and Islamic communities.

I am delighted to discover your website.  I do not know its features yet.  But my first impression is that challenging conventional religions by challenging parts of the bible are useless - if you believe in the Tooth Fairy, you believe in the Tooth Fairy.
The attack should be based on how debilitating and destructive, intellectually and emotionally, are the delusions of a supreme being for the human species on its intellectual and true spiritual progress.

Disappointed Australians cannot enter (and others outside US, Canada and UK). Europe and Aust/NZ have large percentages of atheists and would be invaluable to this competition. Hoping the restrictions are lifted in the future. We even have an openly atheist Prime Minister. How long before there’s an atheist US President? Not in our lifetime. smile

I still don’t really understand.

”...penalties for being out of compliance can be quite stern (e.g. millions of dollars in fines and years of imprisonment” Penalties for whom? For the winner or for Reason Foundation?

Let’s say I won (I’m a South African). If I thought I might be sued for a million dollars by the South African government, surely that’s my choice. If they were attempt to sue you .....WOW, just imagine. You couldn’t buy such publicity.

Or maybe it"s imprisonment that your’e afraid of:
