Why is the video contest restricted to residents of the US, UK, and Canada?

December 20, 2009.

We are very sorry that this is the case. However, ensuring that our terms of use, privacy policy, and contest rules comply with the laws of every country would be prohibitively expensive. In fact, it costs several thousand dollars per country—and the penalties for being out of compliance can be quite stern (e.g. millions of dollars in fines and years of imprisonment). Again, we are not at all satisfied with such restricted eligibility for our contests, and we hope to grow more inclusive in the future.

the reason seems logical.. i always wondered why only to us uk and canada and such developed countries only ... .......  And so many organization and companies are doing world wide competition so easily..  hope next time .. our country too be added ...

Canadian Law is based on UK law as is Australia and New Zealand. There is an additional 25 million or so that could be picked up relatively easily. Ideas per capita from this region are higher than North America or Britain. Our relative geographic isolation and lack of historic baggage allow us to think out of the box.

Greg, that’s an incredibly ignorant thing to say.

A dissapointment indeed, especially given that high percentage atheism is widespread in north and central europe.
Can we not handle other countries by having people submit their entry accepting conditions with a waiver of resident claims within their actual country of residence?  I look forward to finding a way.

I’ve seen other contests that, due to the reasons stated here, cannot issue prizes to countries not included, but nevertheless allow everyone to participate in the contest.  Should someone outside of the legally allowed country win, they cannot claim cash prizes, but are publicly acknowledged.  Cash prize goes 2nd place winner if they’re in the legal countries, or 3rd place, etc..

Just wanted to say that I would definitely be participating in this contest if it was open to Australian residents. Maybe Australia could be next on the list if there is enough interest from over here? Keep up the good work PR.

Interesting that pretty much anyone can enter something like Design Against Fur (at http://www.infurmation.com) or AgIdeas’ NewStar competition (http://www.agideas.net) - in which prizes are quite a bit less - yet we can’t enter something as universally important as Project Reason. Surely something has been overlooked here.

I agree with all those that would like to participate even if they are not elegible for cash prices. In Mexico we urgently need to promote secular values and I guess the same is needed at most countries.
Maybe all members who are not US, OK and Canada residents could get together and establish a special chapter inside Reason-Project.

Another Aussie voice here.  We’re a very Atheist nation - and I think if you invest a little extra to stretch the coverage (which shouldn’t be difficult if you already have the UK on board) you won’t be disappointed with the results.

Yet another Aussie I am. I’ve been waiting so long for a video competition in which I could properly express how I feel about reason, religion and critical thinking, and it’s pretty damn disappointing to be unable to enter this one.

Hi there fellow Aussies. How about we do our own? No prize money of course. I reckon I could work on some book prizes instead though. Contact me through our website if you’re interested. If I get more than 10 people interested I’ll run it here.
