Evolution T-Shirts on Trial in Missouri Town

By Chad Garrison

The Scopes Monkey Trial was decided 84 years ago this past July, but in Sedalia, Missouri, you’d think it’s the summer of 1925 again.

That’s because the band director at the town’s Smith-Cotton High School recently got in hot water for making T-shirts that depict primates evolving into man. The shirts—based on the popular illustration above—were designed to promote the band’s fall program, “Brass Evolutions,” that explores how brass instruments have changed from the 1960s to today.

On the T-shirt, monkeys and early humans hold trumpets throughout their various stages of evolution.

Dear Chad, ask teacher Sherry Melby how old she thinks the world is?

Hmm.. it’s 2009 in the “civilized” world…
Does anyone in the US of A consider this problem with evolution a grand failure of education and public understanding of the world?

Since when is evolution a RELIGIOUS MATTER?
As far as I’m concerned, any one who still claims that evolution is merely a theory and that it hasn’t been adequately proven should stop getting ANY benefits from science and technology, such as cell phones, GPS navigation, not to mention modern health care. If you don’t believe in the scientific process that has led humanity to discover the process of evolution, you don’t get to get any benefits out of science and technology either. go back to your effing cave and shut up.

You’d be surprised how many people in the US of A have their world view dictated by religious tenets of a highly suspect, but very popular, religious text.

Sad for sure.

Disturbing, but certainly not surprising.

I’m contemplating making a phone call about this just to show support.

I grew up in Sedalia, though I did not attend this particular high school. I’m not surprised to hear about this story. In the larger cities and towns (like KC, St. Louis and Columbia) you will find a lot of reason, but the rural areas, especially in the southern part of the state, are very religious. There is a strong Pentacostal presence in the area around Sedalia, which is in central Missouri.

What a bunch of rubes!  There isn’t much else to say about this.

I don’t think anyone is going to link Smith-Cotton High with evolving for a long time.
