Believing the Unbelievable

A Talk by Sam Harris
Posted: May 19, 2009.

Video: The Aspen Institute

Sam Harris outlines the three main categories of arguments religious people use: (1) that religion is true, (2) that religion serves a useful purpose, or (3) that atheism is essentially a religion too (ie, based on dogma or requiring one to accept certain tenets on faith).  Harris then proceeds to address each of these argument types.  This is a great lecture to watch to learn to defend your secularism against the religious.

Here is the same lecture on YouTube.  It’s divided into 5 segments, with the first segment here:

Definitely worth watching!

The talk itself was great but the way Sam answers questions shows that he really listens to and responds to the questioner in a way that is quite unusual. He is very effective.
I want to learn how to listen like that. I always want to start my answer before the questioner is finished. Then I end up talking in a way to try to impress them or others. Listening is essential to communicating. Mr Harris is an effective communicator for reason as a result.

It would be a kindness to offer a youtube version that we bandwidth-impaired can download.
